The incident allegedly took place in the Baiyeku community in Ikorodu, Lagos state, on Thursday, June 9, when a neighbour reported Adeola to Otitoloju for allegedly entering her house and stealing from there.
The neighbour was asked what Adeola stole, and she reportedly couldn’t pinpoint anything. The landlady of the house in which Adeola and her aunty reside in, also reported to Otitoloju that she had been sneaking into her apartment, prompting Otitoloju to decide to punish her.
Otitoloju decided that the ‘best’ way to punish her 12-year-old niece was to cut her hand and neck with a sharp razor blade. Adeola was reportedly rushed to the nearby general hospital that morning, where the hospital reportedly refused to treat her without a police report.
Neighbours proceeded to take the matter to the workers at a Child Protection Network (CPN) in Ikorodu, who then reported the case at the Ikorodu police division.
Otitioloju was arrested and brought before the Ikorodu magistrate court on two counts of child abuse, to which she pleaded guilty. The razor blade was also tendered as exhibit in court.
